My "Own" Girlfriends Check In

During quarantine my mom and I became very fond of the show Girlfriends Check In on OWN. The show consists of 4 female, celebrity friends that catch up and play games for an hour. Even the Queen Mother herself, Mrs. Tina Knowles Lawson did a “savage sixty” edition with her friends! Two weeks ago, I had my own version of girlfriends check in (see what I did there in the title LOL) with my 3 girls; Karly, Sloan and Janae’a. During this long period of isolation, we’ve had a couple of sporadic group facetimes, but this particular night was one FOR THE BOOKS! We all have busy schedules between kids, earning degrees, running businesses and just day to day life, we don’t get to see or talk to each other as much as we would like to. Though we all have significant others, it’s just something about having a girl's night even if it’s through a screen LOL.

The most important thing was to schedule a time that everyone was free. An evening that would work for all of us with the similar amount of time that we would spend at an in-person girl’s night out. I don’t think any of us planned for the zoom call to last as long as it did, but we certainly enjoyed ourselves. It ran a little over 3 HOURS. In August I decided to invest in a zoom business plan since I did back to back zoom parties for my mom and hubby. Even though their parties didn’t go over an hour the plan came in handy for our zoom happy hour.

To ensure that the zoom video call wouldn’t be boring, I prompted the ladies to be ready to spill all the latest tea and have a cocktail in hand! It was fun to have our happy hour even virtually, (hell Karly even dressed up for the occasion LOL). I also said to bring a funny game idea, but we were so busy laughing and going down memory lane we didn’t even get a chance to play the games. It was sort of like that scene from the movie Waiting to Exhale, where they all spent the night together, but apart!

And to top off the night, I had to jump on the 1s and 2s (aka my apple playlist lol). We were undergrads from 2009-2013 so you can only imagine what tunes I was playing, (some a little more explicit than others). If you can’t imagine, no worries, Here it is!

Time has moved us all around and changed us as individuals, but for that one Friday night we were four 21-year olds poppin’ it for pimp and boosting each other up! Some of the best times of my life have been shared with the "Bunny Gang" (as we like to call ourselves) and that check in was exactly what I needed to relax and recharge my focus. Whether they know it or not, these ladies are a significant part of my “why.” Looking at how far we’ve come makes the new victories on the journey so much sweeter and I love them for sticking with me through all of it. If you have girlfriends that feel more like sisters don’t let distance keep you apart. Log in to zoom and back it up to the 99s and 2000s. Let me know how it goes.

Love ya,

Alex
